It is customary for all karate participants to show respect. The standing bow (ritsu-rei) is executed upon entering and leaving the dojo. A standing bow is also exchanged between practitioners at the beginning and end of a contest. Classes always begin with a bow (za-rei) to the sensei (teacher.) In traditional schools the highest ranking belt calls out Sensei, ni-rei (bow to sensei) at which point both sensei and students bow to each other.
Many karate styles have incorporated this symbol into their crest, patches and styles.
The history of the bow goes back many generations.
